What is Criminal Psychology?

Criminal psychology is a specialised subfield of psychology that is dedicated to the study of criminal behaviour, and the psychological factors that contribute to it; as well as the impact of crime on individuals and society.
One of the primary focuses of criminal psychology is the study of the criminal mind, the thoughts and motivations behind the crime. This involves understanding the psychological and social factors that influence individuals to commit crimes. These factors can include personality traits, adverse childhood experiences, substance abuse, social and cultural influences together with the neurological, biological  and psychological makeup of individuals who commit crimes.

Criminal psychology involves understanding and analysing patterns of criminal behaviour, identifying potential risk factors that may lead individuals to engage in criminal activities, and understanding the different types of criminal behaviour that exist. Knowledge of the underlying factors that contribute to criminal behaviour, enables criminal psychologists to develop profiles of criminals to aid in the investigation and prosecution of crimes.
Each of these areas is critical to understanding the complex factors that contribute to crime and to developing effective strategies for preventing and addressing criminal behaviour; including risk assessments prior to granting parole, and the rehabilitation of offenders.
